Willie Turner Obituary

Mr. Willie E. "Country" Turner, a cherished soul known for his warmth and selflessness, passed away on July 7, 2025, in Michigan City, IN, at the age of 83. Born on August 7, 1941, in the quaint town of Gilmore, AR, “Country” was the beloved son of the late Willie Henry Turner and Emma (nee Payne) Turner.

In 1963, Country left his birthplace and made his way to Michigan City, IN, where he would go on to build a life rich with love, family, and service. It was there he met and married the love of his life, Bettye Brooks, in 1980. Their union was filled with joy and companionship until her passing on December 1st of 2007.

Country was a man of robust faith and community spirit. His early religious foundation was laid when he was baptized at Philadelphia Church in Deckerville, AR, in 1953. His devotion to his Christian faith continued throughout his life, and for over two decades, he was a dedicated member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church under Pastor Jacarra Williams.

He was a hardworking man, having spent his career in construction and as a truck driver, retiring in 1999. However, Country's true passion was cooking. In 2011, Country realized a dream by opening Country’s Grill, where he catered to the taste buds of many, serving up dishes that were truly second to none from breakfast-dinner. His cooking wasn't just about feeding the body but also the soul, as he poured his heart into every meal he prepared.

Beyond his family, Country was a pillar in his community. He demonstrated his commitment to brotherhood. His ability to listen and offer sage advice as he was always there to give encouragement with his wisdom and understanding.

Country's familial bonds were the cornerstone of his life. Although he was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Betty, his son Franklin DeMarco "Nitty" Turner, daughter Carla Williams and his siblings Mary Louise "Mary Alice" Turner-Dallas, Sam Turner, Rosetta "Honey" Turner and her twin who passed at birth, Lawrence Franklin Turner, and Calvin Turner, his spirit lives on through his surviving family. He leaves behind his son Don Jefferies, his cherished grandchildren Madison Evans, Juanyei Turner, and Scottaries Orzech, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family who will fondly remember his generosity and loving presence.

Country's educational journey began at Carver High School in Marked Tree, AR, where he laid the foundations for a life of learning and growth. His commitment to fellowship was evident in his involvement with the St. Peters Lodge # 31 in South Bend, IN, where he connected with others through shared values.

Those who knew Mr. Turner will remember him as a friendly, selfless man who always put others before himself. His laughter was contagious, his wisdom was sought after, and his ability to make everyone feel like family was unparalleled.

Indeed, the world has lost a man who was a pillar of kindness and a beacon of light to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Mr. Willie E. "Country" Turner's legacy will continue to inspire and live on in the hearts of those he touched. His journey on earth may have concluded, but his story will be told for generations to come as an example of a life well-lived and well-loved.

A celebration of his life will take place at noon July 19, 2025 at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor James Lane to give the eulogy. Burial will take place at Swan Lake Memorial Garden Cemetery. Viewing will be July 19, 2025 at 10am until the time of service at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church.
