Willie Lewis Obituary

Mr. Willie B. Lewis passed away peacefully at the age of 73 on September 29, 2024, at Aperion Arbors Nursing Home in Michigan City, IN, due to natural causes. Born on April 17, 1951, in Crawfordville, AR, Willie was a man known for his thoughtful and loving nature, and he lived a life that embodied these qualities in every action.

Willie's early years were spent in the nurturing environment of Crawfordville, where he attended the L.R. McNeil School. He grew up surrounded by a large and loving family, being one of several siblings. Though he was preceded in death by his father, James Willie Lewis, and his siblings, brothers Calvin Johnson Jr., James Willie Lewis Jr., L.C. Lewis, Johnnie B. Lewis, Rickey Lewis, and Freddie L. Lewis; and sisters, Betty J. Miller and Shirley A. Lewis, Willie's legacy is carried on by his cherished family members.

Willie is survived by his beloved mother, Mrs. Samella Lewis of Michigan City, Indiana; his devoted and compassionate sister, Samella (Howard) Hunter; his sister-in-law, Delila Johnson of Chicago, Illinois; his four nephews, Cedell U. Richardson, Zachary M. (Brandi) Lewis, Cornelius R. Lewis, and Deshawn Johnson; his four nieces, Debra A. Cochran, Danyell Stovall, Shandell M. Lewis, and Destiny R. Lewis; six grandchildren: Aiden, Carter, Maliya, Madiya, Gianna and Noah as well as a host of great-nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever cherish his memory.

One of the hallmarks of Willie's life was his role as the adored uncle who babysat and poured love into his great-nieces and nephews. His special bond with his niece Destiny's children was particularly profound; they were, indeed, the apple of his eye. Willie's presence in their lives was a gift, and the wisdom and joy he imparted will continue to shape them for years to come.

Willie's character was the epitome of kindness and generosity, always putting others before himself. It was his nature to care for and nurture those around him, and this was where he found his greatest joy. The words of Helen Keller encapsulate the essence of Willie's spirit: "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart." Willie lived through this sentiment, touching the hearts of everyone he met with his warmth and gentleness.

The loss of Mr. Willie B. Lewis will be deeply felt by all who were fortunate enough to know him. His memory will live on as a guiding light of love and selflessness.

In honoring his memory, let us remember to extend the same compassion and love that Willie so freely gave to others. He has left us a legacy of love that will continue to inspire and guide us.
