Tanya Smith Obituary

Tanya Nicole Smith, known affectionately as Tanya to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2025, in Iowa City, IA.

 

She was born on April 11, 1975, in Michigan City, IN, Tanya was a beacon of kindness and joy to all who knew her.

 

Tanya's early years were spent in the nurturing environment of Michigan City, where she attended Park Elementary, Barker Junior High, and Rogers Senior High School, graduating in the class of 1993. Her educational journey laid a strong foundation for her future, as she grew into a compassionate and caring individual.

 

After completing her education, Tanya dedicated many years to the fields of hospitality and childcare, where her warmth and generosity shone brightly. She was particularly fond of her time at Morning Star Childcare, where she was not just an employee but the children in her care were drawn to her nurturing spirit and the love she so freely gave.

 

Tanya's life was a testament to her unwavering faith. She accepted Christ at a young age and was an active member of Vision to Victory Ministries. Her commitment to her faith was evident in her service, particularly in the hospitality sector and her work with the sunshine committee at the church. Her spiritual devotion was a source of strength and inspiration to many.

 

A woman of many talents and interests, Tanya had a passion for cooking and doing hair. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as being with her family and engaging with her grandchildren and daycare kids. Her love for her family was immense, and she cherished every moment spent with them.

 

Tanya was predeceased by her parents, Dorothy Spencer-Miller and Lonzo Miller. She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with her family. She is survived by her three siblings, Sonji (Bryant) Gillespie, Supt. Rodney (Lyzell) Spencer, and her beloved twin sister, Teresa Miller; and step-brother, Sylvester Steward. Tanya's life was further enriched by her two children, Asyia Mitchell and Zyshonne Baker, and one special daughter/niece, Nevaeh Hillard.

 

Her joy was multiplied with the birth of her grandchildren, Aubree Mitchell, King Quiroz, and Karter Goldman, who will miss their grandmother's gentle touch and warm embrace. Tanya also leaves behind two aunts, Vickie (Pastor Peter) Fleming and Odessa Miller, as well as many relatives, including her close friend, Adriann Reynolds, and special friend/cousin, Patricia McGregor.

 

Tanya's siblings, Ricky Spencer, Tony Spencer, and Oprie Spencer; grandparents Ezell and Christine Roberts who preceded her in death


 

 

Funeral services will be 11am, March 22, 2025 at Vision to Victory Ministries with Supt. Rodney J. Spencer to give her eulogy. Burial will take place 11am, March 24, 2025 at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be 10am, March 22, 2025 at Vision to Victory Ministries until the time of services.
