Robert Bell Obituary

Robert Lee "Bobby" Bell, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2024, in South Bend, Indiana, on his 84th birthday. Born in Middlesboro, Kentucky, in 1940 to the union of Albert Lee and Pauline (nee Taylor) Bell, Bobby's journey was one of resilience, dedication, and love.

Bobby's early life was marked by the strong values instilled in him by his parents. He attended an all-black school and graduated with pride in 1958 at the age of 17. His mother's heartfelt advice to harbor no hatred in his heart would resonate throughout his life, guiding him as he faced the challenges ahead. In January 1959, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving his country with honor and distinction for over three years, including two tours in Germany. His service was a testament to his strength and character, and he was honorably discharged in March 1962.

After his military service, Bobby relocated to Michigan City, where he found employment in various factories and a steel mill. His perseverance shone through when, after being denied twice and facing opposition from some community members, he was finally sworn in as a police officer on July 22, 1968. His career with the Michigan City Police Department was one of groundbreaking achievements. He became the first black employee to hold a supervisory position, rising through the ranks from the Rank of Corporal to Sergeant and setting a precedent for others to follow. His retirement on the 29th day of August in 2005 marked the end of a remarkable 37-year tenure with the department, and that same afternoon, he celebrated his union with his loving wife, Ardrema Jones.

Bobby's commitment to his community was paralleled only by his devotion to his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Ardrema Bell; his children, Robert “Robbie” (Trimille) Jr., Charles “Carlos”, Velveeta, and Karin; his four bonus daughters, Erika Watkins, Brooke (Kendrick) Tunstall, April Watkins, and Liza DuBose, whose lives he shaped with love and wisdom; his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by two close friends, John Ivory and Garnet Keeys; sisters-in-love and brother-in-love, Belinda Thomas, Brennetta Jones, Shelletha Hinton, Ernest Jones and Tanya Jones and a host of relatives and associates who will forever remember his leadership.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Pauline Bell, his sister, Dorothy Phillips, and daughter, Anetta Lynn Bell Martin.

Robert Lee Bell's life was marked by his intelligence and his role as a trailblazer. He received his military medals in November of 2017, in recognition of his courage and integrity. Those who knew him best will remember him as a man who set standards, not only in his professional life but as a pillar in his family and community. His legacy is one of breaking barriers, fostering unity, and embodying the values of respect and justice.

Bobby's interests were as diverse as his talents. He was a man of conviction, who lived a life full of purpose and passion. His story is one of triumph over adversity, of paving the way for future generations, and of unwavering love for his family. His life's journey serves as an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

The Bell family takes comfort in knowing that Bobby's spirit will continue to guide them.
