Miss Nancy was born November 29, 1929, to Harry and Mary (Rosial) Warren in Springfield, Ohio. Her mother died when she was an infant and she was sent to St. Louis, Missouri to be raised by her Aunt Jessie.
She graduated high school in St. Louis, Missouri and later attended business college for two years. For a short period of time, she worked as secretary at an insurance company, she later was trained to become a nurse aid at the local hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, she worked 30 years. She always worked multiple jobs simultaneously. As a teen, she worked as a domestic and continued into her in the 70’s. Nancy relocated family in the late 1960’s. In 1969 she started working at Olins “Ammunition Manufacturer in Alton, Illinois from which she retired in 1990’s. After retirement she volunteered at Senior Service, she was a “Grandma” at the elementary school in Alton and as the home care aid through various agencies.
Nancy had a very interesting personality. She could be fierce, fussy, demanding, and harsh but mostly what you saw was her strength and character and love for people. She was dedicated to providing for her family and always helping and giving to meet other’s needs. She was a likable person and a loyal friend. Her quick wit, ingenuity, humor, and energy made her a pleasure to be around. She was always striving, pushing forward to make a better life for her children. Nancy was able to show her love through her service to her family, friends, church, and community.
She enjoyed long car rides with her children and visiting family and her lifelong friends, "who became her family too and giving gifts." After a long day of work, her little grandkids made her house a lively place to come visit. While at home, she enjoyed a little TV, Pepsi, catalogue shopping, writing letters and her thoughts were her peace.
Nancy committed her life to Christ in her late 40’s and faithfully attended church with her children. She was a member of Anchor of Hope Fellowship Center in Alton, Illinois under the leadership of Pastor Seeram Garney. Nancy cherished God and her fellowship time, labored, and participated at her church until her health began to fail. Nancy A. Johnson passed away on November 23, 2023, at Franciscan Health of Michigan City, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, nine siblings, her former spouses, Carl Kates and Garland Johnson; son, Myron Edwards, daughter, Carmen Kates; and one grandson, Dwight Williams.
