Mother Mary Melvia Finnie made her heavenly transition on October 13, 2022.
Celebration of Life will be 11am, Wednesday, October 26, 2022 at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church 123 Helen Street, Michigan City, burial to follow immediately after, at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Viewing 10am-11am, Wednesday, October 26, 2022 at the church.
Mary Melvia Finnie was born on November 20, 1923 in Sweet Home, Arkansas to Peter Smith Sr. and Cherry Ann Gates Smith.
Melvia was a proud graduate of Spenser High School in Columbus, Georgia. She was an early champion of the benefits of education. After graduation she returned to Sweet Home to work and help raise her younger siblings. Taking her responsibility seriously, she developed a nurturing, supportive and encouraging spirit.
November of 1945, Melvia married Clarence E. Finnie, Sr. and to their union they were blessed with three children.
Melvia joined Shiloh Baptist Church in 1952, where she became a lifetime member. While living in Indiana she was an associate member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. When asked why the book of Job was her favorite book in the Bible, she responded that despite all the trials and hardship, Job never lost his faith.
Melvia leaves as blossoms of her plant to continue the celebration of her life her devoted children, Elizabeth, Clarence, Jr. (Diana) and Artie,:14 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 14 great great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Mother Melvia was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Joseph Smith, Mattie Staggers, Peter Smith, Ulysses Smith, James Smith, Mae Turby, and Willie Smith.
