Marvet Garner Obituary

Mr. Marvet Garner, 72, departed this life on June 22, 2021at Franciscan Health of Michigan City.

Funeral services will be 11am, July 2, 2021 at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, burial will follow in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Viewing will be 9am, July 2, 2021 at church until the time of service.

Marvet was born on January 16th,1949 to Uzell and Emma Garner in Tillatoba, Mississippi.

Marvet graduated from Elston High School. Years later he enlisted in the Army. After Serving his country, he worked at Bethlehem Steel for over 30 years until his retirement. Upon retirement, he started his landscaping business, worked at Indiana State Prison, and became a Bus Monitor for the Michigan City Area Schools. He was a faithful member and Singer in the men’s choir at New Hope Missionary Baptist church under the Pastorage of Pastor Jacarra M. Williams. He enjoyed spending time with his family and landscaping many homes around the surrounding areas.

In 1984 he married his faithful and loving wife, of 37 years, Melvan (Starks) Garner.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Uzell and Emma Garner; two brothers, Henry W. Garner and MacArthur Anderson; mother-in-law Virginia Starks and one granddaughter, Taniyah Brown.

Marvet leaves to cherish his memories, His wife, Melvan J. Garner of Michigan City, IN; daughters, LaVette and Kiara Garner of Indianapolis, IN; LaShawn Starks of Indianapolis, IN; and Tina Starks of Michigan City, IN; siblings Uzell (Delores) Garner Jr of Millington, TN; Mattie Garner and Jacqueline Garner both of Michigan City IN. Aunts, Eunice Dickens, Bertha Peterson, and Florida (Leonard) Pryor. Uncles, Alphus Woodard Sr., and Dennis (Linda) Woodard, nine grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends.
