Mark A. Barden, 67, of Westville, Indiana, earned his wings passing through the gates of Heaven surrounded by his family and his hospice nurse, Brittany on May 10, 2024, after his courageous battle fighting metastatic small cell carcinoma.
He was born on Valentine's Day in 1957 in LaPorte, Indiana, to the late Willam “Bill” Barden and Betty Jane (Albertson) Barden-Will.
Mark's early years were spent in LaPorte, where he attended Westville Elementary School and continued through to his high school graduation. His education laid a strong foundation for his future endeavors. His career journey led him to Co-Alliance in Union Mills, Indiana, where he dedicated his skills as a hazmat driver until his retirement in 2023.
He attended Liberty Bible Church in La Porte. He was an integral part of the security team, offering his services and support until his illness made it no longer possible. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, as captured in his favorite scripture, Psalm 62:5-8, which speaks of finding solace and hope in God's unwavering strength.
A man of varied interests, Mark was an avid Chicago Blackhawks fan, a testament to his enduring love for the game of hockey. He found pleasure in the simple joys of life, whether it was fishing, observing wildlife from his back deck with a cup of coffee in hand, or hunting for treasures in flea markets and Walmart's clearance aisles. His enthusiasm for the holidays shone through his dedication to putting up outside Christmas decorations and his excitement for Christmas shopping.
Mark's journey through life was enriched by the love of his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Christine, whom he married on July 14, 2006, and with whom he shared a deep and abiding love. His stepdaughter, Elizabeth (Kevin) Donat, and special "added daughter," Taylor DeHaven (Maverick and Luka), will carry forward his legacy of kindness. His lifelong friendship with Brian (Cathy) Howell, which began in third grade, stands as evidence to his loyalty and the enduring bonds he formed. His cherished his four-footed children, Turd and Smidgett, will miss his gentle presence. Mark's family circle includes his stepmom, Sandy Barden; stepsister, Susie (Chuck) Lynch; brothers, Steve (Brenda) Barden and Keith (Grace) Barden; half-brother, Donnie (Melissa) Barden; and a host of nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Betty Jane (Albertson) and William (Bill) Barden; his brother, Mike Barden; and stepbrother, Mike Wilmath. Each of them held a special place in his heart and now welcomes him into eternal rest.
The Barden family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the Liberty Bible Church La Porte Campus and the LBC Prayer team for their unwavering support and for embracing them as part of the family. Special music provided by Rachel Paarlburg and Krista Loucks lifted Mark's spirits, and the guidance of Pastor Joe Kotulski, along with the support of friends Jim and Amy Paarlburg, Bob Fryer, Jan Garwood, John and Bambi Papes, Will Abercrombie, Don Lamken, Barb Kealey, RonaLee Rice, Kelly Hawkins, Jennifer Phelps, Eva Lazaroski and the CVS and medical professionals, Chesterton crew, Dr. Jamie and Laurie Cornwell, Dr. Kamran, Dr. Quackenbush, Dr. Adeb and staff, and the Northwest Health-LaPorte ladies at the infusion center, was invaluable during his illness.
A heartfelt thank you is also extended to the Heart-to-Heart Hospice team, with a special mention of hospice nurse Brittany Volanti, whose love and compassion were instrumental in guiding Mark and his family through this journey.
The care and professionalism of Emmanuel Funeral Home in Westville, Indiana, are deeply appreciated by Mark's loved ones during this difficult time.
