Marilyn Smith Obituary

Marilyn D. Daniel-Smith, age 62, a lifelong resident of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2025, in the same city where she first saw the world. Born on November 30, 1962, to the late Mr. Cosie Daniel Jr. and Mattie Newsome, Marilyn was a beacon of light and a source of joy to all who knew her. She was a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend whose memory will be treasured by many.

Marilyn received her education in the Michigan City Area Schools and attended Rogers High School, where she formed many lasting friendships and began to shape her future. Her creativity and zest for life were evident early on, traits that she carried with her throughout her life. Marilyn's dedication to her family was unparalleled, especially as a mother to her children, whom she loved with all her heart.

Professionally, Marilyn served as a lady attendant at Emmanuel Funeral Home, a role in which she provided comfort and care to families during their times of loss. She continued in this capacity until her health no longer allowed her to do so.

Marilyn's love for cooking was renowned, and she took great pleasure in preparing meals for her family and friends. Her home was often filled with the aromas of delicious dishes, and her parties were memorable events where love and laughter were the main ingredients. She adored spending time with her family, and her grandsons, JaMierre Coleman-Ashley and Caleb Holmes, were the apples of her eye. These young men, along with the rest of her family, were the cornerstone of her world.

Known for her impeccable style, Marilyn was indeed a "show stopper." She took pride in her appearance and brought beauty and elegance into every space she entered. Her creative talents extended into decorating and design, where she turned the ordinary into the extraordinary with her unique flair.

Marilyn is lovingly remembered by her grandsons, JaMierre and Caleb; her siblings, Ernest (Tiphony) Frierson of Arizona, Charlotte Frierson, Madeline Frierson, Ethel (Joe) Summers, and Brenda Ellis, all of Michigan City; stepsister, Mary Daniels; stepbrother, Jerry (Elaine) Daniel; sister-in-law, Amy Daniel; bonus son, Levi Ashley III; goddaughter, LaQuita Johnson; her close and special friend Ms. Dottie Pankey; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and associates who will miss her deeply.

In addition to her parents, Cosie Daniel Jr., and Mattie Newsome-Mitchell; Marilyn was preceded in death by her three beloved children, Orlando Ashley, Olajuwon P. Ashley, and LaMattia Ashley; her maternal grandparents, Allen Webb and Katie B. Newsome-Williams and paternal grandparents, Cosie and Annie Bell (Phillips) Daniel Sr.; her siblings, Yolanda Frierson, and Julia Kay Daniel-Smith; her brothers, Cosie Daniel III, Earlie Daniel, and Willie D. Daniel; two brothers-in-law, Jeff Ellis and Robert Daniels; two uncles, Keith Williams and Wardell Williams and her niece Chantel Mack.

Marilyn's life was a testament to the power of love, the strength of family, and the impact one person can have on the lives of so many. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she touched, and her spirit will continue to inspire us all. Marilyn D. Smith's memory will be held in the highest regard, as she was truly a remarkable woman who lived a life full of grace, care, and unwavering love.
