Mable Weatherspoon Obituary

Mable Elizabeth Weatherspoon was born March 15, 1943, in Phillippe, Tennessee, Mable’s journey led her from Tennessee to Kentucky, and ultimately to Michigan City, Indiana — the place she proudly called home for the rest of her life. She was the youngest daughter of Annie Bell Slaten (Beckett) and Harry Slaten, both of whom now joyfully reunite with her in Heaven.

Mable’s earthly journey came to a peaceful close on May 14, 2025, surrounded by the warmth of her beloved community. Her life was rooted in faith, filled with the joy of family, and flavored by home-cooked meals and laughter. To know Mable was to be touched by her grace, strength, and generous spirit.

In the late 1960s, Mable married the love of her life, James Weatherspoon, in Kentucky. Their marriage was one of deep love and partnership until James was called home to the Lord in 1987. Together, they built a family that became Mable’s greatest pride. She is survived by their four children:

Kennedy (Jackie) Germany

James Weatherspoon, Illinois

Dortha (Olufemi) Ibironke, Indiana

Christopher T. Weatherspoon, South Korea

Mable also lovingly raised her granddaughter, Felicia Shannon, as her own. Her great-grandchildren,Cornealous Anderson and Camrese Weatherspoon, were the lights of her later years, carrying forward her love, wisdom, and warmth.

Mable’s foundation of faith and learning began in Tennessee and guided her life’s path. She was a faithful member of Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, where she served joyfully as an usher, greeting all with her kind smile and welcoming heart until her health no longer allowed.

Her dedication extended beyond the church and home. She worked diligently at Parco Foods from 1977 to 1979, and later as a housekeeper at Super 8 Motel from 1987 to 2002. Mable also volunteered at Head Start Preschool, reflecting her deep love for children and her selfless commitment to community.

Mable found beauty in the simple joys of life — old westerns and episodes of Judge Judy, the delicious aroma of baked treats from her kitchen, and the peaceful labor of her flourishing garden. Her home was a sanctuary filled with laughter, nourishment, and love.

Mable was a devoted mother, nurturing grandmother, beloved sister, and a treasured friend. Her legacy lives on through her sister Willa Mae Van and her brother Jerry Slaten. Her love extended across generations — with ten grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. Lifelong friends Bill and Monica McFerson, Ann Harvey, and Gwen Metcalf shared life’s seasons by her side — through joy and through sorrow.

Mable now rests in eternal peace, reunited in Heaven with her beloved children: Matthew, Harry S., Ben E. and E-Toy Weatherspoon; her siblings Charles Gilbert, Minnie Townsend, Princese Mae Merriweather, Harry Slaten, and Tom Slaten; her great-grandson Nehemiah Easton; and her special grandson-in-law, James Shannon.

Though their physical presence is missed, their spirits remain close — and Mable’s memory will continue to shine as a beacon of love, resilience, and faith.

May her memory be a blessing, and may her legacy continue to inspire all who knew and loved her.
