Lula Lewis Obituary

Miss Lula Bell Lewis, affectionately known as “Buncie”, transitioned peacefully into eternal rest on March 30, 2024 at Northwest Health of LaPorte, IN. “Buncie” was a guiding light whose loving presence and creative spirit illuminated the lives of many.

She was born on November 19, 1947, City Terrell, Arkansas to parents Oscar Lewis and Altoria Lewis-Gerron.

“Buncie” attended Michigan City Area Schools and graduated from Isaac E. High School. She later obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education.

Lula's journey through life was marked by a steady commitment to education, a profound intelligence, and an immeasurable capacity for love. She enjoyed word search puzzles, shopping, traveling and being with her family.

Buncie's early years were shared with a large and vibrant family. Though she was preceded in death by her cherished mother, Altoria Gerron, her father, Oscar Lewis and seven siblings, Early B. Mabins, Odell Mabins, Wallace Lewis, Willie Mae Lewis, Charles Gerron, Marlon Hatchett, Angel Torrance, and Joy Marsh.

Her legacy is carried forward by her adoring daughter, Lori (David) Marsh. Buncie's spirit also lives on through her five siblings, Annie L. Bridges, Katherine Jackson, Thomas (Cassandra) Foy, Bobbie Calhoun, and Irene Smith, a very niece that she reared as her very own, Sandra Lenoir; four grandchildren, CieAna, Brian, Nathan and Desmond; one great grandchild, Annelia; special friends, Lela McDonald, Debra McConnell, Gertrude Anderson, Renetta Augusta, Earnestine “Bonnie” Benard and Pepper Smith as well as a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and colleagues who were fortunate to bask in her warmth and wisdom.

For many years, Miss Lewis dedicated herself to nurturing young minds as a teacher at the Head Start Program in Michigan City. Her passion for educating children was the foundation of her life's work, and she touched countless lives with her innovative teaching methods and her ability to inspire a love of learning. “Buncie” believed that every child was a hidden gem, and she devoted herself to polishing their potential until they shone brightly.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Buncie was a pillar of strength and joy within her family. Her presence at family gatherings was as essential as the sun is to the sky – a source of light and life. Her laughter was infectious, her advice priceless, and her ability to make each family member feel uniquely loved was her greatest gift.

She approached every aspect of life with a heart full of love, whether she was crafting lesson plans or spending time with loved ones. Her creativity was not confined to the classroom; it spilled over into her daily interactions, making even the simplest moments memorable. Her intelligence was not just academic but also emotional, allowing her to connect with others on a profound level.

Lula's influence extended far beyond her immediate circle. Her involvement in various associations reflected her commitment to community and her belief in the power of collective action. She was a motivator, a mentor, and a friend to many, leading by example and encouraging others to reach their highest potential.

Let us not dwell on the sorrow of her departure but rather celebrate the immeasurable impact she has left on this world. Her journey was one of purpose, her life was dedicated to the service of others. Miss Lula B. Lewis has completed her earthly chapter, but her story continues to inspire and guide us – a narrative of a life lived with passion, kindness, and brilliance. Her legacy will forever be etched in the hearts and minds of those she met.
