James W. Shannon III, known affectionately by friends and family as "Coona," and "Snoop Dogg" was a beacon of light and joy in the lives of those he touched.
He was born on September 2, 1970, in Michigan City, Indiana, he lived a full and vibrant life until his passing on August 24, 2024, in the very city that had the privilege of witnessing his first breath.
Coona's journey on this earth was one marked by love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to his family. He was the cherished son of James W. Shannon II and Ruth Ann (Patterson) Shannon, who instilled in him the values of kindness and resilience. Coona's life was further enriched when he married his best friend and the love of his life, Felicia Shannon, on July 30, 2016. Together, they had a beautiful family, including children Quinteesha Johnson-Shannon, Breanna P. Shannon, Camrese Weatherspoon, Cornealous Anderson, Jamecia “Essie gate” Shannon, James J. Shannon, Ja'Von Shannon, and Journey Shannon. His legacy continued to flourish through his beloved 11 grandchildren, one newborn born after his passing, each of whom he adored with every fiber of his being.
Coona's siblings, Claudine Wooten-Shannon, Tommy (Julie) Shannon, Jason Shannon, and his special sister, Dominique Shannon, alongside close friends Vincent Henderson, Terrence "Terry" Collins, Kevin Cooper, Lawrence "Bubba" Kimble, Devin Hawkins Chris Diggs and Peter Davis, formed an unshakeable support system. He was also blessed to be a part of the extended family of the Cooper, Bank, Gore, Evans, Weatherspoon, George, the entire West-Side Neighborhood, and many relatives who all played an integral role in his wonderful tapestry of life.
Though preceded in death by his father, James W. Shannon II; grandparents, John Anna Hurt, Eugene Patterson, James Shannon I, Essie Hodges, and Brady Walker, special aunt, Mary Elizabeth "Liz" Shannon their memories and teachings remained a guiding force throughout his journey. He was also preceded in death by his pet dog, Liz.
Coona's educational path took him from Park Elementary School to Barker Middle School, and finally to Rogers Senior High School, where the seeds of his future were sown. His professional life was as varied and rich as his personality, having worked at Long Beach Country Club, Virk's Liquor Store, Shoreline Brewery, and ultimately embracing the role of a dedicated stay-at-home dad, a job he performed with unparalleled passion and grace.
Basketball was the focal point of Coona's life, a sport in which he not only excelled but also inspired others. His ability to always hit the shot when it mattered most was legendary, and his prowess was not just limited to playing; he also refereed Midnight Basketball with a fair and firm hand. Yet, it was his signature alley-shot that will forever echo in the courts of Michigan City. Beyond the basketball court, Coona enjoyed sports of all kinds, playing poker, and engaging in the thrill of FanDuel betting. But above all, the time he spent with his family was what he treasured the most.
Coona was a man who could light up a room with his humor and had a knack for making everyone feel seen and heard. His thoughtfulness knew no bounds, as he consistently put the needs and happiness of others before his own. In a world that often forgets to pause and appreciate the simple joys, Coona was a living reminder to cherish every moment.
As we reflect on the life of James W. Shannon II, let us remember that each day is a gift and an opportunity to make a positive impact. Coona's life was a testament to the power of love, the strength of family, and the enduring spirit of community. Though his physical presence is no longer with us, his legacy will continue to motivate and uplift everyone fortunate enough to have known him. Coona's journey may have concluded, but the story of his life will continue to inspire, encourage, and bring smiles to faces, just as he always did and "LET THAT BE THE REASON."
