We come together today to honor the life and legacy of Elaine DeBerry, a cherished individual who left an indelible mark on the hearts of many. Born on April 6, 1939, in Pennsylvania, Elaine embarked on a journey that spanned 85 remarkable years, culminating in her peaceful passing on May 21, 2024, in Indiana.
Elaine was the beloved daughter of the late Goldman Douglas and Lillian (Huntley) Douglas. She was a sister to Winston Churchill Douglas and a devoted mother to her late son, Yaphet Douglas DeBerry. Her life was a testament to her strength and resilience, characteristics that she passed on to her surviving children: Herbert (Jill) Ulmer of Masury, Ohio, Marlin Shawn Ulmer of Michigan City, Indiana, Dedra (Pastor Dwayne) Hurt of Michigan City, Indiana, and Bryant (Tammy) Ulmer of Las Vegas, Nevada. The family tree flourished under Elaine's nurturing care, extending to fifteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense joy and pride.
Elaine's pursuit of education led her to earn a Master's Degree, a feat that reflected her lifelong commitment to learning and personal growth. She had a short stent as an instructor at Grambling State University, where she inspired countless students with her wisdom and dedication. She channeled her knowledge and passion into a rewarding career for 40 years as a mental health nurse.
In 1979, Elaine DeBerry made the move to Michigan City, a place she would call home for many years. As a member of New Covenant Outreach Ministries Church, Elaine found spiritual fulfillment under the guidance of her son-in-love, Pastor Dwayne Hurt.
Elaine's zest for life was evident in her diverse interests and hobbies. She was known for her love of working, dining out with friends and family, and embarking on renovation projects that showcased her creative vision. The Madeline & George Smrt Community Center of Michigan City was among her favorite haunts, a venue where she could engage with her community and indulge in her passion for socializing and staying active.
Those who knew Elaine would describe her as wise—a beacon of knowledge and insight. Her warm presence will be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing her, and her legacy will continue to influence the lives she touched.
Elaine's life was enriched by the unwavering support of two special caregivers, Vera Reid and Alisha Morris, who ensured her comfort and well-being with compassion and dedication. Their care allowed Elaine to enjoy her final years with dignity and grace.
The impact of Elaine DeBerry's life extends far beyond the confines of her immediate family. A host of relatives, friends, and acquaintances mourn her passing, yet celebrate the time they were fortunate enough to share with her. Elaine's story is one of love, perseverance, and the indomitable human spirit.
Mother Elaine DeBerry will be laid to rest at Grambling Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Grambling, Louisiana.
