Earnestine Tillman Obituary

Mrs. Earnestine (Starks) Tillman affectionately known as Mrs. Tillman, peacefully passed away Friday, May 10, 2024 at her home.

Mrs. Tillman’s celebration of life will be 11am, Saturday, May 18, 2024 at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church with Supt. Rodney J. Spencer to give the eulogy. The visitation will be from 4:00pm to 7:00pm Friday, May 17, 2024 at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church.

She was born on August 17, 1943, in Blue Mountain, MS, she was a beacon of love and gentleness throughout her 80 years of life. Her journey on earth concluded as gracefully as it was lived, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and kindness.

Mrs. Tillman was the cherished daughter of the late Wiley W. Starks and Virginia (Gray) Starks. Her heart always held a special place for her beloved husband, James “Pete” Tillman, who preceded her in death on June 8, 2004. Her devoted daughter, Melody Starks preceded her in death. She was also the loving sister to her three brothers, John, James, and Tommy Starks, who have all passed before her.

Mrs. Tillman's life was rich with the joy of her family. She is survived by her five devoted children: Dewayne Starks of Indianapolis, IN, Jamie (Jerome) Dunn of Pearl, MS, Tracie Tillman of Michigan City, IN, Doris Noah of Horne Lake, MS, and Carolyn Tillman of South Haven, MS. Her siblings: Helen Jackson, Melvan Garner, Vera Gaston, and Joseph (Michelle) Mattingly Jr., will hold her memory dear, along with her godchildren, Gertrude Farmer, Daryl Armstrong, Marty Anderson, and Devin Hawkins.

Her legacy continues through her beloved grandchildren: TaKiyah Starks, Brandi Starks, Joshua (Preunda Butler) Dunn, Christopher (Darian) Straughter, Drake (Ashley Dowell) Foster, Jacob Dunn, Jordan Dunn, Brittany (Marcus) Hall, Derek Tillman, Larry Tillman, and Martez Calhoun. Seventeen great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, also survive her. Each of them will carry forward her spirit of love and the joy of life she instilled in them.

Mrs. Tillman received her formal education in Mississippi, which laid the foundation for her future endeavors. She built her career as a talented seamstress and a dedicated retail employee. Her commitment to her community was evident through her involvement as a former member of the Order of Eastern Star- St Rose Chapter 40 and a former member friend of "The SUGARS." Her spiritual life was nurtured at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a revered member.

Known as "Magic Lady" by her family. Mrs. Tillman had a passion for gardening, which allowed her to cultivate beauty in the world around her. She was an excellent cook, sharing her love through the dishes she prepared. Traveling brought her new experiences, but her greatest joy was found in the simple pleasure of enjoying life. Her interests reflected her zest for life and her ability to find happiness in everyday moments.

She will be remembered not only for her nurturing nature but also for the strength and resilience she embodied throughout her life.

Mrs. Earnestine Tillman’s impact on this world is immeasurable, and her spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her. Though she will be deeply missed, the love she shared will forever be cherished in the hearts of her family and friends. Her memory will be a guiding light, reminding us  all to live with love, gentleness, and an enduring appreciation for the beauty of life.
