Mr. Clarence Black, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away in Michigan City, Indiana on July 1, 2023, at the age of 84. Known for his creativity, and enduring love for his family, Clarence was a pillar of strength. He was born on September 16, 1938, in Greenville, Mississippi, to the late Lee Black and Zeolar (Harris) Black. As the last of seven siblings, his passing marks the end of an era for the Black family.
Clarence was a lifelong learner, having received his formal education in Mississippi. Clarence moved to Chicago, Illinois where he worked and later relocated to Michigan City. Clarence thirst for knowledge and an unwavering work ethic propelled him into a fulfilling career at Thermco Instruments in LaPorte, Indiana. After dedicated service, Clarence retired in 2003, leaving an indelible mark on his colleagues and the company. Not one to rest on his laurels, Clarence then worked as a bus driver for Michigan City Area Schools. His warm smile and friendly demeanor made him a favorite among students and staff alike.
On August 10, 1979, Clarence married Bessie Smoote, in Michigan City, Indiana. Their love story spanned 43 years, during which they built a beautiful, blended family and created countless memories. Clarence was a devoted family man who took immense pride in his children, Angel Bean, Nadine Black, Clarence Black, Jr., Netra Kendle, Shelia (Ricky) Hervey, Rodney (Veronica) Smoote, Rolando Smoote, and Orlando Smoote. His love extended to his many grandchildren, whom he adored.
In addition to his family and work, Clarence had a passion for fishing and working on cars. He could often be found with a fishing rod in one hand and a toolbox in the other, ready to tackle any challenge. He also had a deep appreciation for music, which brought joy and harmony to his life. His co-workers at Thermco Instruments and the Transportation Department will fondly remember his infectious laughter, intriguing stories, and the camaraderie they shared.
The loss of Clarence Black is deeply felt by all who knew him. He was a man of integrity, kindness, and resilience, leaving behind a rich legacy that will continue to inspire generations. He is survived by his loving wife, Bessie, their children, and a host of grandchildren. His family and friends will remember Clarence as a beacon of light, a source of wisdom, and a symbol of love. His memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him.
Memorial Services will be noon, July 15, 2023 at Emmanuel Funeral Home (Trail Creek) with Elder Bonnie Erby to give the eulogy.
