Obituary

 Carolyn Jean Lewis was born March 23, 1963, in Tyronza, Arkansas, to Betty Gean Wren and Elder Willie L. Martin Sr., Carolyn was adopted July 18, 1975, and tenderly brought up by Pastor Emeritus Luster Lewis and Vera Lewis.

 Known for her friendly demeanor, generous spirit, and selfless actions, Carolyn was a beacon of love and compassion to her family and community. Her infectious smile, warm heart, and her willingness to lend a hand to those in need will forever remain etched in the hearts of the numerous lives she touched.

Carolyn Jean Lewis, a deeply loved mother, grandmother, sister, niece, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2023, in Michigan City, Indiana. Carolyn was preceded in death by her biological parents, stepmother Doris Jean Martin; one brother David Lewis and one sister Veronica Martin, Grandmother Rosie Lee Wren, and special aunt Bobbie Gean Wren; nephew, Michael Martin.

 Her life and memories will forever be cherished by her two sons, Steven “Stevie” Lewis, and Timothy "Timmy" (Amanda) Lewis, and her adopted parents, Pastor Emeritus Luster Lewis, and Vera Lewis. Special Aunts Josiephine Walker and Alice Dudley.  The family tree, sturdy and expansive, includes an array of loving siblings, Lester (Penny) Lewis, Lonnie (Leslie) Lewis, Terry (Raina) Lewis, Roy “Bay” Briggs, Jr., Elder Lavern Briggs, Pastor Allen (Dana) Briggs, Sr., Michael (Sandra) Briggs, Karl (Ketta) Briggs, Willie Martin, Robert Martin, Willie Martin Jr.,  Kevin Lynch, Barbara Martin, Lacrystal Martin, Patricia Hodges, Lavern Martin, Evon Roberts, Letha (Robert) Sykes and Sherry Martin. Eleven grandchildren; Gage Ott, Shelly and Heavenly Williams, Steven, Stephanie, and Sapheria Lewis. Carter Jefferies, Benjamin “BJ” Mosley, Deon, Alivia, Aliah, Amelia, and Timothy Jr. Lewis. A close friend, Lawrence Orange, and a multitude of adopted siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and associates. Their hearts will undeniably feel the void left by Carolyn's absence, but they also take comfort in knowing that her radiant spirit lives on through them.

Carolyn received her early education from Michigan City Area School. Her life endeavors laid a foundation of resilience and determination that she carried throughout her journey. In her professional career, Carolyn dedicated many years of service as a housekeeper at prominent establishments such as the Holiday Inn, Blue Chip Casino Hotel Spa, Hampton Inn, and Clarion Inn. In addition, Carolyn extended her nurturing nature to babysit the children in her neighborhood, affectionately known as the "Neighborhood Granny" further cementing her legacy as a community caregiver.

Carolyn attended Life Temple Church of God in Christ Church. Above all else, Carolyn relished the moments spent with her grandchildren, creating wonderful memories that will now serve as precious keepsakes. She also took great pleasure in quiet moments, often accompanied by her beloved hot coffee and Dr. Pepper.

Carolyn J. Lewis was a woman of exceptional character. Her life was evidence of the power of love, kindness, and generosity. As we mourn her loss, we also celebrate her life, cherishing the precious memories formed over the years. Carolyn’s passing marks the end of an era, but her spirit remains, both a comfort and an inspiration to those who knew her.

Funeral Services will be noon, Thursday, July 20, 2023 at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Allen Briggs to give the eulogy. Burial will follow at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Viewing will be 11am, Thursday, July 20, 2023 at the church until the time of Service.
