Azleas Lee McGhee-Gilbert, was born in Como, Mississippi on April 30, 1943 to Henery McGhee Jr. and Willie Victoria Perry.
She attended Zion Hill Baptist school and church for k-2nd grade. She moved to Chicago at the age of 8 and attended Harlem Grammar on the westside of Chicago then William Penn and graduated from Farrgott High school in 1960.
Azleas Lee married Fred S. Gilbert on July 14, 1960 who preceded her in death.
Azleas Lee was an amazing woman and very strong willed, which supported her success as a Businesswoman. She worked for a bail's bonds men, state of Illinois, Michael Reese Hospital as an admin clerk, account executive at Career Academy and the Chicago Urban League. She owned a restaurant inside of Star Lounge, called L&L grocery/ restaurant, and The Renge Affair resale shop.
Azleas was a member of Mt Eagle Baptist church and she later became a member of Antioch Baptist church and a member of the Eastern Star. In 1977 Lee became a Nichren Sho Shu Buddhist and devoted her life to learning living the methods and practices of Buddhism.
In 1988 she began to lose her sight but her beliefs in the Universal Law of Cause and Effect and chanting Nam Myoho Rehne Kyo: Devotion to the Mystical and Universal Law of Cause and Effect gave her the strength to push forward and live a life that was filled with fun and much sass.
Azleas L. Gilbert, 78, passed away at 2:08am on Thursday, July 8, 2021. Azleas was preceded in death by her mother, Willie V. Hibbler, father, Henrey McGhee; brothers, June and Eugene McGhee; sister, Willie B. McGhee; nephews, Robert and Kirk McGhee.
Azleas Lee Gilbert leaves to cherish her memory; sister, Gloria J. Hibbler-Arnold; brother in-law, Michael Arnold; sisters in-law, Mattie McGhee and Hazel McGhee; nephew, Danny McGhee; nieces, Denise McGhee, Rena McGhee, and Tatyana Arnold, special cousin, Susie Lawson, and a host great-nieces, nephew, cousin, family and close friends.
A memorial celebration will be held at a later date.
